Most of the time, what I find in the produce aisle inspires me in the kitchen. And with summer here, inspiration can be found everywhere. My favorite season, hands down, is summer. I love the warm weather, the laid back schedule and all of the fun summer foods my family and I enjoy during these months. Summer is just the best time of the year.
The summer months also means we are making smoothies all the time. I love how easy they are to prepare and the kids love a cold, frothy treat for breakfast or as a snack. I can sneak in all kinds of secret healthy stuff in a smoothie and all the kids see is something delicious to eat.
I typically add protein powder to our smoothies, but many of them have a bad after-taste that is so not kid-friendly. And since pasteurized eggs from Davidson’s Safest Choice Eggs became readily available in San Diego, I now like to drop in a raw egg in the smoothie for added protein.
The kids are safe from salmonella poisoning and they get the protein they need without the bad taste. It’s a win-win for all of us.
I asked my eldest, The Professor, for a new smoothie flavor he would like this summer. He thought long and hard and finally shouted, “I want a s’mores smoothie!”
Of course, he did. What shouts out SUMMER better than a chocolate s’mores smoothie?
This smoothie uses unsweetened cocoa power. To sweeten the smoothie, I used ripe bananas and a bit of honey. Feel free to adjust the sweetness to your taste buds. I wanted a healthy yet fun snack, so I kept the smoothie mildly sweet.
Plus, it is garnished with graham cracker crumbs and topped with a flaming marshmallow. Why add even more sugar? Feel free to substitute with mini marshmallows, a dollap of marshmallow cream or nothing extra at all.
Now resume your summer fun.

I want to face plant into this smoothie, very badly!
The toasted marshmallow and the graham cracker crumb crust on this make this really look like quite the dessert! Good to know its not a sugar bomb but instead is sweetened with bananas and honey, definitely looks a lot worse for you than it is ๐
My kids wanted it sweeter, but I reminded them it was a nutritious smoothie and not a milk shake!
What could be better than family around the campfire with this flaming treat! What a creative twist to a summer favorite!
These would make one feel like a kid again! What a fun, fun treat!
I want summer to return so I can try this. How wonderful it looks!
Love that top picture! And what a great idea for a smoothie. Hats off to the Professor! And you, of course. ๐
