If you are a big camper or just like cooking over fire, you must have wondered about the best cast iron dutch oven accessories for campfire cooking. Dutch oven recipes are an easy way to cook up hearty meals for hungry campers. There are a number of ways to cook up camping recipes and so many tools and accessories to choose from. So let’s dive in while I share the best cookware and accessories for the camper in your life!
If you are new to cast iron Dutch oven cooking, then let me be clear. I am not talking about cooking in those fancy and expensive enameled Dutch ovens over here.
This shopping guide is about cast iron Dutch ovens that are safe to use in a campfire, which will crack and ruin those other fancy pots.
Dutch ovens make terrific cooking vessels because you can cook most anything in it. From stews to soups even baking cakes and breads, the food possibilities are limitless. So you can see why they are so popular to cook with while camping and might want to learn how to cook in Dutch oven.
Why listen to me?
Well I wrote a cookbook all about cooking outdoors over campfire: The Camp & Cabin Cookbook. Yes, a camping cookbook. But you can also cook these 100 recipes in your backyard, at the park or even in your kitchen.
I camp often with my family and we love cooking outdoors. And cooking in our Dutch ovens makes it oh so easy!
How to choose a Dutch oven
When shopping for a Dutch Oven you want to choose one with little legs on it. These legs are to lift the oven above the coals and keep the air flowing between the coals and the pot. Placing a Dutch oven without little legs directly on hot coals will create uneven hot spots that can burn your food.
The lid of your Dutch Oven should also have a little rim around it to keep the hot coals and ash on the lid and not let it fall into your pot when you are peeking inside. The lid should also fit flat on top of the pot, keeping the heat trapped inside for even cooking and baking.
The size of your Dutch Oven will vary on need and use. Is it just for you and your family of four? Are you cooking for a crew? How many meals are you preparing?
I like to use the 10-inch Dutch Oven for desserts. The 12-inch and 14-inch sizes are great for one pot meals for 5-12 people.

Kingsford Charcoal Briquettes
Charcoal briquettes make Dutch oven cooking and baking easier because the coals are uniform in size. Most Dutch oven cooking temperature guides are based on the use of these kinds of briquettes.
Using a chimney starter helps you light up charcoal quickly and evenly. Fill it up with briquettes, add scraps of paper or other kindling underneath the chimney and light it up. When briquettes have stopped smoking and are bright red, they are ready for your Dutch oven.

A heavy duty lid lifter keeps you safe from burning when it is time to remove the hot Dutch oven lid. It also keeps it stable and keeps it from wobbling or spilling coal ash into your food.

Dutch Oven Disposable Liners
These liners are made from strong enough aluminum to never rip or break while stirring or lifting out your food. Many people prefer cooking with these liners which makes cleanup much faster and easier.
16-inch Stainless Tongs
