I am not a big drinker. Never really cared for the taste of alcohol. Not beer, not wine and not liqueur. Over time I have tasted many mixed drinks and found that I prefer fruity cocktails. But even then, I don’t drink a lot. Alcohol puts me to sleep and doesn’t make me drunk.

So many of my alcohol recipes are either catered to my limited personal taste or experiments that I roped my husband into. This recipe for a strawberry and lime salty dog falls into the ‘my kind of cocktail’ category.

Why you have to try this recipe

A salty dog cocktail is a classic gin drink. You can also make it with vodka. It is typically made with grapefruit juice and gin and served in a glass with a salted rim. Salted rim?

I was excited to see a non-margarita drink using salt. The salted rim helps cut the bitterness from the grapefruit juice. If you do not want salt on the rim, then the cocktail is called a Greyhound.

And since Valentine’s Day is around the corner, I decided to modify the classic Salty Dog into one that is red or pinkish. Think of this as a strawberry margarita made with gin and not tequila. It’s a drink not a sailor who has spent most of his/her life at sea!

It is a real refreshing drink with lots of flavor. A great change from a vodka or rum fruity cocktail.

Recipe tips and FAQs

You can absolutely customize your salty dog with other fruits. Add some raspberries or blackberries to your mix, or just use strawberries. You can also use orange or lemon juice instead of lime.

What is the best salt for a salty dog cocktail?

This cocktail has salt around the rim, like a margarita. The best kind of salt to use for either drinks is kosher salt. It’s big, flaky and not as salt as regular salt. Just run a lime around the rim of the glass and press it into a plate filled with kosher salt.
