It’s May and that means it’s National Strawberry Month. I received a boat-load of strawberries after my farm tour to an Oxnard strawberry farm and the family has been having a blast enjoying these delicious strawberries.
We eat them straight up, with cereal, with ice cream… with ANYTHING. I decided I needed a pick-me-up to get my health and energy back in-line. And what else did I have my fridge? Pomegranate juice and kale. Hmmmmm….
Is strawberry juice a thing?
If you have ever taken a bite into a big strawberry, you’ve probably had strawberry juice dribble down your chin. So yes, strawberry juice is a thing. The main reason we don’t see bottles of pure strawberry juice in the grocery stores is that it takes a whole lot of strawberries to produce a glass of juice.
Now if you want to make strawberry juice at home, you can certainly do so. Simply put your strawberries in a blender until it is all puréed and smooth. Pour it through a fine mesh sieve to remove the pulp and seeds. And what you are left with is pure strawberry juice. You can additional sugar if you want, but if the sugars are sweet, no more sugar is needed.
Is this a strawberry drink or smoothie?
But for me, the thought of tossing out the wonderful pulp of the strawberry out was blasphemy. So for this strawberry drink, I simply put all three ingredients in the blender and YUMMO! So good! I get my kale in raw (it’s a bit rough for me to eat in a salad) and I get all the nutritional benefits of all three power ingredients.
I could end the post with this, but that would be dull. What really hung me was what to name this thing. Is this a smoothie without the milk? Is it a slushee? What kind of strawberry drink did I come up with? So, I did a little research and found these definitions:
ade: fruit drink: a sweetened beverage of diluted fruit juice.
cooler: a tall drink, consisting of liquor, soda, and a fruit garnish.
slushy: a flavored frozen drink.
slurpee: a flavored frozen drink sold at 7-Eleven.
smoothie: a thick, smooth drink of fresh fruit puréed with milk, yogurt, or ice cream.
mocktail: non-alcoholic versions of alcoholic beverages.
juice: the liquid obtained from or present in fruit or vegetables.
spritzer: wine and soda water mixed.
punch: punch is the term for a wide assortment of drinks, both non-alcoholic and alcoholic, generally containing fruit or fruit juice
Is this strawberry drink nutritious?
Strawberries are a very popular fruit not only because of duh, strawberries are incredibly delicious! But those who follow a low carb diet love berries because they are high in fiber, low in sugar, and don’t spike your glycemic index. If you strain out the pulp to make straight up strawberry, then you are not getting the benefits of the fiber found in strawberries.
I use pomegranate juice as the liquid base for this strawberry drink for a number of different reasons. First of all, it’s red like strawberries! Secondly, I simply love pomegranate juice. But most importantly, pomegranate juice is incredibly good for you. It is incredibly rich in antioxidants and high in Vitamin C.
Pomegranate juice is also reported to help remove free radicals, protect cells from damage, reduce inflammation and many other health benefits. I added kale to the mix to make this strawberry drink even healthier. My kids aren’t the only ones who needs to sneak in greens.
- 1 cup pomegranate juice
- 6 oz strawberries, hulls removed
- 1 cup loosely packed kale
- In a blender combine ingredients and blend until smooth, about 2 minutes.
- Divide into two glasses and serve.
Cooking Tips: Feel free to adjust the amount of kale. I grabbed a heaping handful and threw them in the blender.
You can also spike your drink with vodka, tequila or rum.
