When my husband and I married, we did what most people did. We registered for plates, utensils and kitchen gizmos without knowing anything about what we wanted. Most of what we requested on the registry was based on looks. It looks pretty. It looks nice. Blah. Blah. Blah.

That’s how we ended up with our retro stainless no-frills blender. After a few smoothies, I realized how pathetic my new blender was. Luckily, I didn’t use it much and I hid it in the cupboard.

Fast forward a few years and a few kids later and that pathetic blender is even more pathetic. Every time I made the kids a smoothie, the darn thing would get stuck and leak – from the bottom. I had to disassemble the pitcher and wash it after each use because the parts would get gross on me if I didn’t. It was a chore.

I got grumpy. I stopped using the blender. I started doing research on new ones. I published a cookbook. I forgot about the new blender I needed. Then last summer my  kids repeatedly asked for smoothies and I hauled out the crummy blender and cursed at it. Oh yeah, my blender sucks.

Repeat grumpy cycle.

So you can imagine my enthusiasm when the folks at Ninja Blender asked me if I wanted to try out their blender. Perfect timing! I figured ANYTHING was better than my old one.

Now, I’m sure you are thinking, “Why didn’t you just buy a new blender?”

Enter obstacle #1: My husband. He’s a mechanical engineer. If you have an engineer in your life, you feel my pain. The rest of you, you just don’t understand the hell I go through every time I buy something – anything – new.

My husband analyzes it and picks at it to death. As someone who designs machines, I am always hearing about design flaws in some gadget or small appliance I happen to own.

So when the Ninja Blender arrived, my husband pulled it out of the box. I closed my eyes and braced myself. Hubby was quietly mumbling to himself. We were both expecting him to immediately inspect and report what was wrong with this new blender, yet I was shocked by his silence. Visually, it passed inspection. Hubby was eager to find  flaw, so he quickly washed everything and put the blender to use.

We started simple, with a simple smoothie for the kids. Holy Crap! This sucker is super powerful! What would take my old blender 3-5 minutes to blend, took my Ninja less than 20 seconds.

Let me repeat: LESS THAN 20 SECONDS.

“This is so cool!” Hubby cried out. I breathed a sigh of relief.

The Ninja has a big pitcher with these crazy blades. Also included are various smoothie canisters of different sizes. The 32-ouncer is the perfect size for mixing up smoothies for my 3 kids. The power that this thing kicks out is mind-blowing. It chops up ice and frozen strawberries in seconds. It’s 1300 watts of power will make you a believer, too!

For the past month we have been enjoying smoothies, piña coladas and countless other blended treats. My husband is totally in love with our new blender and is still in awe of how well it is built. He still giggles with excitement when he watches it work. Boys and their toys.

I was inspired to go beyond the smoothie and made this Sriracha Hummus with it.
