This week San Diego has been hit with Santa Ana winds. What does this mean to the rest of the world? It means that despite the calendar telling us it is February, despite the temperature hitting close to freezing just a week ago, desert winds from the East are blowing into town.

Yesterday, it was a dry, hot 85ºF beach kind of a day. Today it will be around 80ºF. Maybe we should play hooky and head to the beach instead?

This change of weather is probably why I had mojitos on my mind. Even though it is February, citrus fruits, like blood oranges, are now in season. So why not add some color to your bleak winter day?

Why you have to try this recipe

I am not a big cocktail drinker. I don’t even care for wine or beer. But every now and then I don’t mind a fruity cocktail. I have a few of these favorite drinks on my list, and one of them is the mojito.

Vodka is to harsh for me to drink, but I do like the flavor of rum. A classic mojito is made with mint, lime and sugar muddled (crushed) in a shaker with rum added to it. On a hot day, a mojito really does hit the spot.

In fact, I like the mojito combination so much I have come up with a variety of this cocktail using other fruits: Sake Mojito, Blueberry Mojito or a Red Currant Mojito.

This blood orange mojito uses crimson sweet blood oranges, giving it this gorgeous color. A bright red glass of sunshine on a winter day.

Recipe tips and FAQs

A mojito is made by muddling together fruit, sugar and mint in a cocktail shaker. To muddle means to crush together. This can be done with a muddling tool or the end of a rolling pin or wooden spoon.

The idea is to crush the mint with the abrasive grains of sugar to release its oils and flavor into the fruit. Once muddled, rum is added, the cocktail is shaken together and poured over ice. Salut!

What type of rum do you use in mojitos?

Typically white rum is used in making mojitos. Depending on the flavor profile you are looking for you, can also use a combination of rums like spiced rum or Malibu rum.

What is in a mojito?

The classic Cuban mojito is made with white rum, fresh mint, lime and sugar. But you can use any types of fruits to customize your favorite flavor of mojito.
