Fall is here and so are all kinds of apples. They are perfect in this Apple and Avocado Salsa. Go green to add zing, or use red apples for a bit of sweet.
Well today we are all detoxing on our crazy Halloween block party and the sugar overload I’m sure my kids went through. Luckily, Halloween is only ONCE a year! While the kidlets are at school, I will scavenging the Halloween candy, pulling out and hiding my Whoppers and secretly donating the bulk of the loot.
But that doesn’t mean that we have stopped celebrating fall. Luckily for me, Frieda’s Produce sent me a wonderful assortment of gorgeous heirloom apples to sample and “play with.” Yes, that’s foodie-fun for me!
We are all into our Sunday football games and although it’s downright HEARTBREAKING to watch our Chargers blow every game in the second half – GASP! – we still sit and watch. Week after week.
Of course, we always need munchies when we have a crowd over to lament the game with us. Let’s be honest, this is the time of the year we are all constantly entertaining. Chips and salsa is a fun and easy snack, but don’t get in a rut with your salsa!
Now, I’m drawing the line in the sand when I say that I like my salsa CHUNKY not puréed. So this salsa is a great, chunky, no-cook salsa. And some avocado trees here in San Diego still have fruit, so of course, I added some of that creamy goodness to my salsa.
For this salsa, I used Frieda’s gorgeous King David apples. It’s a deep red color, crisp and has a touch of sweetness that was perfect for this salsa. Go green if you want more of a tart salsa or red for a sweeter flavor.
And check out your local Sprouts market for the other varieties of heirloom apples like the King David, the Cortland, the Mutsu and “surprise it’s pink inside” Pink Pearls! You’ll never look at an apple the same way again!
