Pfeffernuse Crescents

This German holiday treat has a hint of pepper with a touch of citrus infused within. Recipe adapted from Family Circle, December 2008

Ingredients:

Instructions:

  1. In a large bowl whisk together:
    • 2 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 tsp baking soda
    • 1/2 tsp baking powder
    • 1/4 tsp salt
    • 1/4 tsp black pepper, ground
    • 1/2 tsp cinnamon, ground
    • 1/4 tsp nutmeg, ground
    • 1/4 tsp cloves, ground
  2. Using a stand mixer, whisk together until smooth:
    • 1/4 cup butter, unsalted , softened
    • 2 eggs, large
    • 1 TBS orange zest
  3. Whisk in until combined:
    • 1 cup honey
  4. Put mixer on low speed, gradually add flour mixture, and beat until incorporated.
  5. Cover and refrigerate dough overnight.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  7. With well-floured hands, form 1 level teaspoon dough into a ball.
  8. On a well-floured work surface, form each ball into a 2 1/2-inch-long log.
  9. Bend into a crescent shape and place on ungreased baking sheet.
  10. Repeat with remaining dough.
  11. Bake for 8 minutes until slightly golden.
  12. Remove from oven and place baking sheet on cooling rack for 1 minute.
  13. Roll warm cookies in:
    • 1 cup powdered sugar
  14. Place cookies on cooling rack to cool completely.

Serving Suggestions: If you like your Pfeffernuse spicier, increase pepper to 1/2 tsp. You can also use other forms of ground pepper, from white to pink peppercorns crushed.
