Happy Nowruz and the First Day of Spring!

Nowruz Haft Sin by FamilySpice.com

Tomorrow marks the first day of Spring. And on the Persian calendar, it is also the first day of the new year. Actually, the Spring Vernal Equinox falls today, March 20th, at 6:45 P.M. EDT. It’s a time to gather with your family, sit around the haft sin and share the traditional meal of sabzi pollo ba mahi (herbed rice with fish), kookoo sabzi (herb quiche) and ash-e reshteh (noodle soup).

My family and I celebrated last night, one night early. This is the first time that I will be away from my family for Nowruz. I will be attending the California Olive Oil Council’s annual meeting in Monterey. Not too shabby. Of course, instead of enjoying the outdoors and family time, I will be inside talking and learning more about the olive oil industry.

It’s all good.

My haft sin has been up all week. A little early, but I had to get everything ready on this end before I left for my trip. Every year I make my haft sin a little differently. I hope you enjoy this year’s set up. I went a little rustic.

Happy New Year Laura, thank you for teaching us and the lovely photos attendant . . . hope you are having a very successful time away . . . so happy you are doing well . . .

  2. Dear Laura,
I tried unsuccessfully several times to buy your E-book Nowruz but I finally gave up. I am from Argentina, I already bought two times on your site but I can´t remember my username or password. There is no an option to insert the country Argentina, only US or Canada (in the billing information section), but it is an e-book, so I don´t understand.
Please let me know how can I buy it.

Happy Nowruz again and congratulations for your wonderful work!

    • Hi Marisa, I think I figured out the problem and fixed it. I don’t know my shopping plugin too well and I’m learning these little glitches as they happen.

I hope you have a wonderful Spring in Argentina!

  3. Thanks for sharing about Nowruz! I haven’t ever heard of this so it was interesting to learn about. The spice I’m most intimidated by is Fenugreek. I just don’t know what to use it in!

  4. What a nice giveaway, the spices I’d love to learn more about are Thai spices. Happy New Year!

  5. Lovely presentation! I had a friend who would celebrate Nowruz each year, and he always went all out with his table setting. Congratulations on the new ebook!

I love learning new things! Excellent giveaway!

  7. My spice of choice right now is Smoked Paprika. I’d love to try the Posole spices.

  8. Curry is the one I’m definitely most intimidated by! I’m a big wuss when it comes to hot spicy…so I’m not sure how to use it properly! I’d love the subscription!

I’d like to play around more with Native American spices! Thank you.

  10. Love this giveaway and I think I’m just entering in the nick of time 🙂 I think I’m most intimidated by Middle Eastern cuisine, since I’ve experimented very little with it (but would love to learn more!) Belated Happy Nowruz!
