It seems that the grocers have woken up this week and have some real good bargains out there for you frugal gourmets. After a few quiet weeks, I know I’m ready to stock up on some edible bargains! Of course, it could be that I’ve been cooped up in the house for 2 weeks with either myself or my kids being sick! I’m ready to shop!

This must be roast week, because a lot of great cuts of roasts are on sale this week. $2.99/lb is the magical combination, along with 10/$10! A good deal, but not screaming, is the Chuck Roast (Albertsons), Eye of Round Roast (Albertsons), Bottom Round Rump Roast (Vons/Safeway), and Sirloin Tip Roast (Albertsons and Henry’s Marketplace) all on sale for $2.99/lb. The Cross Rib Roast is $2.49/lb at Vons/Safeway. For pork lovers, here’s the screaming deal: Pork Shoulder Butt Roast and Pork Country Style Ribs are on sale at Albertsons for 10lbs/$10. GREAT deal.

Other great meat deals include the delicious T-Bone for $3.77/lb and Pork Sirloin Chops for 99¢/lb at Ralphs/Kroger.

Chicken lovers don’t feel left out. If you missed the cheap whole chickens of last week, we have deals for you, too. Vons/Safeway has Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts for $1.77/lb, a FABULOUS price for this lean meat. The same deal is good for Boneless Skinless Chicken Thighs, too. Need a boost in the morning? Feeling sluggish between meals? Here’s a great smoothie filled with Vitamins and protein that will give you that extra spring in your step. Add your favorite supplements, and you’ve got one very nutritious drink. Full recipe is below.

You’ve seen it before, but now we’ve got two great recipes for you. Using the pork shoulder roast you can cook it slow in your slow cooker or in the oven for a crispier meat. Who needs the crust? Using great tasting vegetables, this quiche is full of protein and fiber. Make ahead and cut into pieces so you have a breakfast ready during the week to grab and go! For the full recipe, click here.

Orange Cream Smoothie

Smoothies make a nutritious breakfast or snack and they are so easy to make. This Orange Cream Smoothie is delicious and kid friendly, too!

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 1 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 banana, peeled
  • 1 1/2 TBS agave nectar*
  • 1 tsp orange zest
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Directions:

  1. Add in a blender:
    • 1 1/4 cup orange juice
    • 1 1/4 cup plain yogurt
    • 1 banana, peeled
    • 1 1/2 TBS agave nectar*
    • 1 tsp orange zest
    • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  2. Blend until smooth.
  3. Divide evenly into 4 cups and serve.

Notes:

Cooking Tips: If you do have some smoothie left over, make smoothie pops! Pour into small 3-5 oz. paper cups, stick a popsicle stick in it and freeze! Popsicles will be ready in 4-6 hours. If you're not going to eat them within 24 hours, put popsicles in a plastic freezer bag. You can also do this with leftover pudding, too * You can substitute agave nectar with honey.
